How to Choose the Right Fire Pit Size

The right fire pit size depends on how many people you want around it, how much room you have, and how much heat you need. Here is a simple way to decide.

1. Start with how you will use it

  • Accent or pool-edge piece: a 24"–33" fire bowl adds flame and ambiance without taking over the space.
  • Conversation area for 4–6: a 36"–48" fire pit gives everyone a view of the flame and room to set down a drink.
  • Large gatherings or long sectionals: a linear fire pit (56"–84" long) lines up with sofas and spreads flame across the seating.

2. Measure the space

Mark the footprint on the ground with tape before you order. Leave comfortable walking room around the fire pit, and always follow the clearance requirements in the product's installation manual for distance to furniture, walls, overhead structures, and plants.

3. Match heat output to your goal

Heat output is measured in BTU per hour. Each product page lists it under Specifications. Examples from our current manufacturer spec sheets:

  • Maya Fire Bowl, 24": 45,000 BTU/h
  • Cabo Square GFRC, 36": 90,000 BTU/h
  • Cabo Square GFRC, 48": 140,000 BTU/h
  • Unity Fire Pit, 72": 190,000 BTU/h

Higher output means a bigger, warmer flame. If your main goal is ambiance, a smaller bowl is often enough; for cool evenings with a group, choose a larger fire pit.

4. Pick the shape that fits the layout

  • Round works in open spaces and circular seating.
  • Square pairs well with modern, symmetrical patios.
  • Rectangular / linear fits along sofas, walls, and pools.

5. Check your gas setup

Decide on natural gas or propane before you order. See our guide, Natural Gas vs. Propane.
